STA Announces Connect Fare System

Starting October 1, 2022, Spokane Transit will have a new fare collection system on both its Fixed Route bus and Paratransit van vehicles. The Connect fare system is an account-based system that allows customers to pay their fare using a Connect smartcard or an STA mobile application on their smartphone. With the launch of the Connect fare system, STA is also introducing new and expanded reduced and zero-fare options.

Both Connect cards and virtual eConnect cards, which are created inside the new STA Connect mobile application, allow customers to register their account online, add value at their convenience, utilize an autoload option, view ride history, and check their current balance. Fare value can also be added in person to a Connect card at the Customer Service Counter at the STA Plaza.

Connect cards also benefit riders over previous pass options with the introduction of fare capping. Fare capping only charges customers for the rides they take, without the upfront costs of buying a month or day pass where they may not utilize its full value.  Occasional riders will still benefit from a Connect card by eliminating the need to have exact cash fare on hand.

New and expanded reduced and zero-fare options will also be available with Connect on Fixed Route service. Any rider 60 and older or individuals with disabilities qualify as Honored Riders and are eligible for a 50% fare discount. Our new Stars and Stripes fare category also offers a 50% fare discount for active-duty military personnel and veterans. A 20% fare discount is available in the existing Student fare category, for those enrolled in vocational training, apprenticeships, and any other post-high school or educational courses. Our new Rider’s License is a zero-fare option for all youth ages 6-18 and offers unlimited free rides on both Fixed Route and Paratransit service. Riders 5 and under continue to ride free if accompanied by an adult. All reduced and zero-fare options require an application and documentation to verify status.  More information on the reduced and zero-fare options and documentation requirements is available at spokanetransit.com/reducedfare.

Connect cards will be available online at the STA Website (spokanetransit.com/connect), in person at the Customer Service Counter at the STA Plaza, or at participating retail locations starting October 1. Virtual eConnect cards can be created inside the STA Connect mobile application, also available October 1. Reduced Fare applications will be available starting September 1 on STA’s website or at the Customer Service Counter at the STA Plaza.
